Charter College Plans Emergency Preparedness Training Exercise at Anchorage Campus

ANCHORAGE, Alaska, Sept. 10, 2026 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Charter College will host a planned Mass Casualty Emergency Preparedness training on Saturday, September 19, 2026, at its Anchorage campus. This hands-on exercise provides Charter College students the opportunity to practice responding to a large-scale emergency event in a safe, controlled learning environment.

The emergency preparedness drill simulates a mass casualty event where students must treat individuals with a variety of medical needs.

"Charter College nursing students will respond to scripted scenarios that require them to promptly respond to patients with planned 'injuries' as they take on different roles based on their experience level and progression through their programs," said Ted Walker, APRN, Nursing Faculty at Charter College. "It builds confidence, leadership qualities, and continues to refine the medical training they receive."

According to Walker, senior nursing students will take on leadership roles, coordinate patient movement, make triage decisions, and assess patient outcomes. Junior and entry-level students will take on clinical response roles or serve as simulated patients. This allows students at different stages of their education to work together and build the collaborative skills they need to manage real emergencies and become a pivotal part of a healthcare team.

"Emergency situations can happen at any moment and can be unpredictable, and our nursing students must know how to respond," explained Cynthia Booher, Ph.D., Dean of Nursing at Charter College. "These events provide our students with a chance to implement their training alongside our industry partners in a realistic setting."

Charter College invites representatives from partnered medical facilities in Alaska to observe the exercise alongside its faculty and provide feedback throughout the event. These partners also conduct preparation and debriefing sessions where the students can reflect on their performance and identify opportunities for improvement.

The exercise will take place entirely on the Anchorage campus at 2221 East Northern Lights Blvd and will run throughout the day. Any emergency activity seen at or around the campus on September 19th is part of the planned educational exercise. The event is fully simulated and does not pose any threat to students, employees, visitors, or the surrounding community.
