How a Bend Landscaping Foreman Turned Hands-On Irrigation and Grading Skills Into a Leadership Role

Gilbert became a foreman within a year and now leads landscaping, hardscaping and irrigation work throughout Central Oregon.
BEND, Ore., Sept. 30, 2026 — Flannery Services is recognizing foreman Dustin Gilbert for his rapid growth within the company, advancing from a basic crew position to a leadership role within his first year.
Gilbert joined Flannery Services after being referred by a friend. Owner Tucker Flannery initially placed him in a basic crew role to see what he could do. As Gilbert took on more responsibility, Flannery became comfortable having him work independently and direct other employees on job tasks.
A single father since his children were born, Gilbert said providing a safe and stable life for his family is a major source of motivation. That sense of responsibility carries into his work, where he is known for being dependable, patient and willing to take on difficult jobs.
Today, Gilbert leads landscaping, hardscaping and irrigation projects for the Bend-based company. Flannery considers him one of the company’s most valuable employees because of his knowledge across several areas of landscape construction and his ability to lead crews in the field.
Before joining Flannery Services, Gilbert worked for another landscaping company and later in the welding department at BASX in Redmond. He now has six years of landscaping experience.
One area where Gilbert has developed extensive hands-on experience is irrigation troubleshooting. He has learned to recognize signs of underground leaks, including unusual mounds that can appear near the base of grass.
“Diagnosing irrigation issues is like second nature to me at this point,” Gilbert said.
Gilbert has also developed experience identifying low areas while grading properties for hardscaping projects. Proper grading helps create an even surface and directs water away from areas where it could pool around pavers.
His role also includes helping newer employees recognize details they may not immediately notice. Gilbert said Flannery Services has given him opportunities to gain hands-on experience in areas where he had previously worked under someone else’s direction.
For Gilbert, the variety of the work is one of the reasons he has stayed in landscaping. He enjoys the creative side of the industry, working outdoors and seeing a project come together.
“It can be frustrating sometimes, but seeing the final product at the end of the job is worth it,” Gilbert said.
