Richard P. Benevento has set a 2027 completion goal for a new book that will continue the athletic and personal narrative first presented by Journey to Blue Lake.” The planned work will follow his triathlon development beyond the first race and into the experience of preparing for and completing a full Ironman.

“Journey to Blue Lake” focuses on a turning point. Benevento was grieving the loss of his father to leukemia, recovering from a damaging divorce, and becoming concerned about how much he was drinking. He needed something concrete that could pull his attention toward progress. A triathlon became that challenge, even though the swim portion forced him to face a deep fear of open water.

The decision was especially striking because Benevento already knew what disciplined athletic training looked like. A former gymnast of more than 20 years, he reached the University of Iowa through a gymnastics scholarship, then later joined the Bud Light Daredevils for high-flying trampoline dunk performances. Still, the lake created a mental test unlike the controlled environment of a gymnasium.

His 2012 triathlon became proof that fear could be worked through rather than obeyed. Benevento kept training, accepted coaching, and used repetition to build confidence. By 2018, his endurance ambitions had expanded enough for him to finish his first Ironman.

The forthcoming book will pick up where the existing memoir leaves readers wanting more. Benevento expects it to examine the longer training cycle, the added pressure of the Ironman distance, and the mindset required to keep choosing difficult goals after the first breakthrough. The 2027 project positions Blue Lake not as the end of Benevento's transformation, but as the starting point of an endurance story still being written.
